For this research task, I had to take a look at the World Illustration Awards and write a short reflective commentary on which areas I was drawn to and why.
Reflective Commentary
Watching through the World Illustration Awards, I found myself particularly drawn to the alternative publishing (comic, zine, and graphic novels), as well as book covers, children’s publishing and site specific.
I like the narrative aspects of illustration because of how much an impact storytelling can have on people, and I think that reflects well site specific because they tell a narrative through a static image without being reduced down onto paper. I’ve only recently found children’s illustration interesting after my last assignment where I had to create a lift the flap book.
I surprisingly like the commercial side appealing and the packaging, because you’re able to get much more people to see the artwork and make more impact with that artwork. I find the packaging really interesting especially for multimedia avenues such as CDs DVDs since you can represent the client you are creating for.
I do like almost all the categories that the world illustration awards presented, but I don’t think I can see my work anywhere at the moment. I still have a lot to improve, especially my confidence.
Evaluation
This brief research task has made me think more about where I could see my work and how I can adapt my work to better suit the needs of each category.
I look forward to what this next section brings…
