Research Task: Street Art

For this research task I need to find street art near me and make some notes and discuss how the work interacts with the environment; I'll be showing a photo then discussing underneath.

This 660 ft boarded wall was designed to hide the construction behind it, from what I know about this piece is that the notable Mr Doodle (Sam Cox) created this piece of Street Art; It acts a continous doodle process of Sam Cox on the long stretch of wood. It acts as "graffiti" and art, the style is similar to the stereotypical "graffiti" but this is typically his style. The style is fun and quirky and hides the fact that it's used as a wall to hide possible construction; the work is very distracting and busy so you're not focused on what could be behind the wall.

I'm not too sure who created this and where it is located is by an office building and underneath the walkway, the piece is very graphic style and simplistic. The style is more structured than what you'd typically see for graffiti, and I think it could have been done with stencil than free-hand. I can't interpret a certain message from these two pieces, it could be linked with darker messages since you have a crow and a spider-- it's probably easier to see if the paint hadn't been chipped away, so I could be missing something. I know at this location there is a traffic police hub, but I'm not too sure if they're linked.

Another piece by Sam Cox, this huge piece takes up an entire side of a building and acts as a stylistic piece of art that covers up the dull brick wall it was originally. Again, like his last work I previously showed, the work has the style of stereotypical graffiti with stylised lines, dots and rounded shapes to create the friendly, fun style. It doesn't differ from typical graffiti, the style and the self-expression is there. The piece acts as a self-expression of Sam Cox's mind, I recently watched 'The Trouble with Mr. Doodle', showing what it's like to be Mr. Doodle and Sam Cox; drawing for Sam allows him to escape and create an expansive fun mural.

I'm not too sure who came up with these beautiful and incredible art murals, but these murals take up large spaces that would typically be just a plain brick wall; diverting the thoughts of boring buildings to seeing something truly incredible. The inclusion of wild-life and abstraction makes a lot of people stop and take in the art and just be in awe, showing the beauty of art and how inclusive it is and inspire others that graffiti is more than funky fonts-- they do this by taking an animal and including plants, flowers and pixels to make it more than just an animal piece. This is in the town center where it has been losing a bit of business, and to get more people into the town and get involved, they set up a street art walk, where it started at Mr. Doodle's tall wall and walk around the town and different shops.

Taking a look at these street art makes me think differently about what street art is, it's not just funky fonts, it's much more than that. And I really like the idea that you're not paying to see the art and it's something you can just discover on your walk, seeing something that someone took time and dedication to create to either hide something else or to spice up the environment, it's incredible.
