For this critical review, I will be exploring the history, development and the importance of video game art and design; throughout I will be taking a deep dive into innovative games and the processes behind them.
To understand this topic, I need to understand the history of video game design. Video games have adapted since the 1970s, going from platform pixel into high resolution 4k creations. For research, I will be exploring the documentary 'High Score' on Netflix that talks about the history of video games and the people who created them; while looking into different articles and interviews with major creators that built the game industry today.
From there, I will delve deep into the development stages of game design and appreciate the importance of each step, I will be using documentaries such as 'Grounded: The Making of The Last of Us' that shows the process of their ground-breaking game, 'The Last of Us'. As well as, Riot Games' 'So You Wanna Make Video Games' series on YouTube, the creators of the global hit 'League of Legends', and looking into 'Indie Game: The Movie'; for insight into how games are made without big development companies. This research will help me highlight key areas of design that contribute to the game's design and how it is passed on into the final product of the game, and also to spotlight areas of creation that make games so successful.
Moving forward, I will then acknowledge the significance of successful and innovate development of video games with evidence from the behind the scenes of 'Cuphead', a fully hand-drawn game; and a documentary and interviews from creator 'ConcernedApe' otherwise known as 'Eric Barone' of his brainchild 'Stardew Valley'; a one-man creation that is still being played 9 years since its release.
To finish up my critical review video essay, I will be concluding my thoughts on the significance of video game art and design; expressing my own evaluations of how far game design has come, and my reflections of how each process differ and resemble from different developers/companies.
