Critical Review Note

Going into what I'm thinking of doing for my critical review that is added to the credit at the end of this unit, I feel an interest to explore a video essay. Either looking into book cover designs, board/roleplay game design.

Brief

This assignment is to capture different audiences through my artwork through the development of different engagement types. What this means for this assignment is taking my previous work that I used for Assignment 1 (Self-Directed Project), and discover what alternatives I could explore by changing the formats, for example, taking a webtoon and turning it into an album cover.

I need to select what new format I want to explore and show my journey through the initial project design to the new design; I need to create two new pieces of work per project.

Let's revisit the work...

Images and thoughts

I've picked these four images to revisit, and I wanted to include some personal work that I love since I want to represent the variety of different mediums that I like to explore.

Looking at these images and thinking about how I could approach these new designs, I feel like the one that might be quite the challenge is the 'Save Our Ocean' webtoon, it's very elongated and has a lot of writing, however I still have the original file on my iPad so I could always remove and adjust where needed.

Design-wise, anything can be an album cover, especially if it's done right. I also had an interesting thought of turning a few into gifs or animations. The best way for me to understand how I can approach this is with thumbnails.

My Process

I started out with making thumbnails to see how changing the composition can help adapt to the new format, I wanted to make the idea real in my head so I took my work into Affinity and adapted the work to their intended formats-- I also tested out different fonts to make the piece feel more complete.

Evaluation

For this assignment, I took five pieces of my work and re-evaluated how I can change their original formats. By changing the format, I got to experiment with how an existing piece of work can be adaptable and shift to other forms.

There are pieces that worked really well, the 'Lighthouse' pieces worked really well, the 'Manga' CD cover worked well. They both show good potential for their newly acquired formats, the compositions work well and suit the font as well. I especially like the album cover of 'Lighthouse', its reminds me of ballad album, or a moody pop album.

The pieces that were terrible was the 'Blue Painting', 'Flames' and 'Fishes'; I tried my best to capture their new format but they look a little boring and ordinary. Nothing exciting. The 'Fishes' book cover looks like it could've had potential, maybe if I had changed it into a square book (to simulate a children's book).

Overall, I'm really disappointed in myself for this assignment, I was confused at what to do for this assignment but once I thought I managed my head around it I thought it was going well.

This assignment might be a little stumbling block for me since I couldn't really get myself motivated for this piece of work, I hope that with my next assignment I can do much better.
